The Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS) was established in 1997 with an aim to provide LIS education to students through effective teaching and practical training. The department is working with the vision to educate individuals for careers as Librarians, Library Information Officers, Archivists, Information Scientists and Knowledge Managers. The students are trained to undertake instruction, research and service-oriented programmes that require current emerging information technological developments and market requirements. Presently the department is offering one year of Bachelor of Library and Information Sciences (B. Lib. I. Sc.), one year of Master of Library and Information Sciences (M. Lib. I. Sc) and Ph.D. courses in Library and Information Science. The department has dedicated and experienced faculty members who delivered the latest LIS education to the students. The Department has one state-of-the-art Information Technology Laboratory with 25 Computers, Scanners, Wi-Fi Internet, Projectors for video conferences, smart classrooms, LCD TV, etc. To cater regular scholarly needs of students in addition to the Gautam Buddha Central Library of the University the departmental library has more than 600 titles. So far, the department has produced more than 500 Library and Information Professionals placed in prestigious positions in reputed institutions such as BHU, IITs, DRDO, CSIR, etc. The major areas of research in the department are ICT applications in Libraries, User-studies, Job satisfaction of Library professionals, Oriental Libraries, Knowledge management, Research ethics, Conservation and Preservation of Manuscripts and so on. The thrust areas of the research are emerging trends and technologies in the Libraries such as Digital Libraries, IITs, Public Libraries, Collection Management, e-ShodhSindhu Consortium, UGC-INFONET Consortium, Information Services for Divyang, Open Access Initiatives and Growth of ICMR Libraries in Digital era, ICFRE, Cost Benefit Analysis in Agricultural Libraries, etc.

The Department has been established with the following objectives:

  • An understanding and appreciation of the vital and pervasive role of Information as an essential tool in all development activities
  • An understanding of the application of Information Technology in the handling of information in libraries and information centres
  • Full comprehension of the global nature of information for proper cooperation, and coordination among the countries
  • To equip the students with the necessary skills of Information Science, background for Designing, Implementing, Operating and Managing an Information Centre or a Documentation Centre or a Library, pertaining to any field such as R & D, Business & Industry, Media, Academic Institutions & Government Departments, etc.
