Initially the course of B.Sc.(Hons.) and M.Sc. Geology was started under the aegis of School of Environmental Sciences in the year 2015. In the year 2020 the course was upgraded to Department of Geology in the School of Earth and Environment Sciences. The Department offers two major academic programmes providing impetus to the study of geology in the Northern Region of India. The Department offers full time B.Sc.(Hons.) Geology and M.Sc. Geology degree with the duration of 3 years and 2 years respectively. The Department is offering the courses with the team of experienced, well qualified interdisciplinary and highly motivated faculty. Faculty members of the department have published their research work in reputed journals. The Department is emerging as a leading institution in the field of Geology showing its paramount aspirations to explore and excite all the individuals to pursue all the aspects and approaches of advanced mineralogy, petrology, geodynamics, geochemistry, paleontology & oceanography, metamorphism & orogens, groundwater geology, applied stratigraphy, natural hazard and disaster management. Equal emphasis is laid on practical training and field based skills and laboratory studies. The Department is well equipped with spacious classrooms, advanced laboratory, computer labs and departmental library. Besides the departmental infrastructure, students and faculty have access to various facilities of other departments and centres. The department is perpetually advancing to create a quality atmosphere in pragmatics as well as aesthetics in geology.

Objectives of the Department

  • To promote quality teaching with regular up-gradation of course structure, syllabus and course materials for the students.
  • To promote comprehensive understanding of the subject by teaching both conventional and new areas of relevance in the domain of geology
  • To promote comprehensive and interdisciplinary knowledge in both teaching and research by emphasizing inter-linking geology with biological, chemical and physical sciences.
  • To strengthen field Geology as is the capstone course for the Geology program which requires knowledge gained in Geomorphology, Petrology, Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, Structural Geology and GIS verified by field study.
  • To make teaching in geology theoretically rich along with regular field trips
  • To motivate and inform students about the opportunities and future prospects in the field.
  • To develop the overall personality of students and prepare them to compete and success in their endeavours.
